If you’re like me, then you love makeup, but maybe don’t have room in the budget to purchase all of the top of the line beauty products out there! In this post I am going to show you the makeup products I used to achieve this everyday look (with a pop of red) in the picture below, and the best part is they’re all drugstore products that are totally affordable!! Ok, so first of all I do have some drugstore brands that I tend to go back to every time. (and I’ve tried just about all of them!) My favorites are Almay, Revlon, and Covergirl. I don’t use only these brands, but they’re my go to. Here is a picture of everything I used to get the look above. I will post a link before every product I talk about that will take you to a page where you could read about it or purchase it if you’d like!
So lets get into the nitty gritty.. I usually apply some kind of moisturizer before my makeup. Typically either Cetaphil face lotion, or Jergens natural glow.
Tip – If you want to use Jergens natural glow or some other kind of self tanner on your face, but you are worried about it looking orange or streaky, mix it with some of your daily face moisturizer and then apply it all together! I have found that this is a wonderful way to avoid the dreaded fake tan look, while giving your skin a nice natural glow. 🙂
Almay Smart Shade Foundation – For this look I used Almay Smart Shade foundation in Light/Medium, and Almay Clear Complexion in Light for my concealer. I am IN LOVE with Almay Smart Shade foundation. It is enough coverage without feeling like you’re plastered in makeup, and it really does match your skin tone very well! It looks very light and almost grey when it first goes on so don’t freak out.. it will change and blend beautifully with your skin tone. This foundation goes on very smooth and consistent without leaving streaks. I feel like I am not wearing foundation at all, which I love.
Almay Concealer– The Almay Clear Complexion concealer is great too! Goes on just as smooth and feels just as light, but does a wonderful job covering up dark circles and any other spots.
Tip – Get your concealer in one to two shades lighter than your foundation. It really helps brighten up under your eyes and makes you look more awake and alert!
Application – I apply the foundation on my entire face with a makeup sponge and then I apply the concealer under my eyes, on my eyelids, down the bridge of my nose, a bit in the middle of my forehead, and a dot right above my upper lip and on my chin. Then I blend these areas in well by dabbing it with my sponge. This gives a very nice highlighted look!
Next I used some bronzer and some blush!
Milani Bronzer – The bronzer that I normally used and LOVED has been discontinued… many tears were shed.. lol, not really, but its SUPER sad!! So the one I used for this look was just one that I had randomly pulled off a shelf in desperation. It is Milani Bronzer All Over Glow. It works fairly well! I’ve been happy enough with it. I usually prefer a mineral bronzer for optimal blending.
COVERGIRL Cheekers Blush – The blush I used was Covergirl cheekers in deep plum. I love this blush, I’ve used it for years, and although I do use other ones at times, I always come back to this one! It’s a beautifully rich plumy-pink. If you are even more fair skinned than me, you may want to go with a bit lighter of a pink than this one Application – I applied the bronzer first to my cheek bones primarily, but I also lightly dusted kind of my entire face with it just to give that nice tan glow, but go very light (or even not at all) on the “highlight areas” like middle of the forehead, bridge of the nose, under eyes and apples of the cheeks, and chin. Then apply the blush lightly on your cheekbones right above where you put the bronzer.
Tip – Suck your cheeks in to help you find your cheekbones and apply right on and below that bone to create a shadow for definition. Then apply the blush right above that and blend it in. Go easy with the bronzer and blush. Too much can look like you’re pepping for a Broadway production instead of just a trip to get coffee with a friend. 😛
Almay Loose Finishing Powder Light– To finish off and seal my face makeup I used Almay Smart Shade loose finishing powder in light. Let me tell you.. this was a more recent purchase and I’m totally in love with it! It is hard to find a loose powder finish that doesn’t look too…well….powdery!! This stuff does the trick. It goes on beautifully and leaves you with a smooth, finished look and helps all the other makeup stay where it should!
Tip – There are products that help hold your makeup on longer, typically it comes in a spray form, but they can be pricey! Sometimes, what I do, when I want my makeup to stay on really well for a special occasion, is mist just a bit of my hairspray over my face from far away… NOW, you may think I’m crazy, but this does work! Please do not inhale it though… not good, and for gods sake please close your eyes! 😛 If you decide to try this trick use a LIGHT hold hairspray like Kenra Design Spray . (My personal Fav.) Too heavy of a hold will feel sticky and tacky on your face. I also would not try this trick if you have especially sensitive skin as it could cause irritation. In other words… proceed with caution!! 😉
The face is now locked and loaded, lets move on to the brows!
COVERGIRL Brow Pencil – This is the brown pencil I used in soft brown. It goes on well and stays on great! Love it. COVERGIRL Brow Powder – I have been using this powder lately to fill in my brows, also in soft brown. I do like it, but because it is a powder it does tend to leave some powdery-ness on my cheeks afterwards that I then have to touch up, so I’m not in love with that part, but it does fill in my brows nicely!
Tip – A little goes a long way! Be careful not to go overboard with the brows. It is very easy to make them look too large, long, or dark. Take it easy with the powder especially, and ask someone you trust to be honest with you if your brows look too overdone. I ask my hubby all the time, and he will (nicely) let me know if there is too much going on! 😉
From Brows to Eyes!
Almay Eyeliner – I used Almay gel smooth liner in charcoal for this look. I like this liner because it gives a defined smooth line, but with the control of a pencil rather than trying to use liquid. I like pencils because you can continue to sharpen them which helps for an easy application! L’Oréal Mascara – I took advice from a friend and tried L’Oréal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara in Black, and I really like it! It glides on without clumping, while still making your lashes look long and full! Its great for a natural, but enhanced look. Which is what I typically go for. 🙂
Maybelline Eyeshadow – The eyeshadow I used was Maybelline quad eyeshadow in Mocha Motion. I’m really not too picky about my eyeshadows as far as brand, but I usually go with either Almay, Revlon, Covergirl, or Maybelline when purchasing from a drugstore. I just go for the colors I like! This one is great for everyday wear or for a smokey eye! The Maybelline quad packs like this one conveniently label each color for you to tell you where to use them, although I sometimes break the rules with that! 😉
Application – I applied my eyeliner first with this look because I wanted to go over it a bit with a shadow for a softer look. I put it on the top lid from the outer edges to about the middle of my eye, I did not go all the way into the corner! I like it to start thicker at the outer edge and gradually get thinner. I applied a bit to the bottom lid too following the same pattern as the top lid. Not going all the way in to the inner corners makes your eyes look brighter and bigger! When you apply liner all the way around your eyes they can appear to be smaller and more round. After the liner I applied the shadow. First I went over the eyeliner with the darkest color on the pallet. This makes for a softer more every-day kind of look. Then I used the color on the top right for my entire lid. I did not use the lighter grey color at all this time. The lightest color on the top left I used under my brows, under my eyes in the middle and in the corners. Make sure to blend all the colors together. Last but DEFINITELY not least I applied the Mascara to both my top and bottom lashes. Now those eyes are poppin!
Tip – Use the lightest color in this eyeshadow palette along the bridge of your nose, right above your upper lip, along the top of your cheekbones, and on your chin to create a beautiful highlight! Blend in with a brush or your finger. This gives your skin that “glowing” look. 🙂
And there you have it! Some great drugstore products that can help you achieve a subtle, but sassy, everyday look. 🙂
